concrete cold temperature
How can I make my “cold room” colder?

Our house has a “cold room” under the west-facing front steps. It has concrete walls, floor, and ceiling, with an insulated door and vent to outdoors. The only problem is it doesn’t get cold, at best maybe 5 degrees C below the regular basement temperature. I was thinking of insulating the ceiling to avoid heat from sunshine on the house steps. Any other suggestions?

Is this meant to be a “cold room”? I have never heard of that in a house.

If it already has a concrete ceiling, how much cooler do you think insulation is going to make it? I wouldn’t bother with it. It sounds like you would need a refrigeration system to really get what you are looking for.

If you do find a way to make it colder, make sure the relative humidity stays around 50% in the room.
